I did this by plugging the USB (installer), clicking the power button, and immediately closing the lid to force the display to go in external monitor.

Hello all, I recently put Linux Mint on my Panasonic Toughbook CF29, everything works fine, except when I close the lid, and open it again, I get a black screen (as in off). No amount of pressing keys, momentarily pressing the power button, etc, will get it to do anything. I can do ctrl+alt+f2 to get a CLI, and log in, then run startx, but this is cumbersome.
