EAFs make up approximately 60% of today's steel making in the US. This chapter illustrates the operational details of EAF and BOF processes. The electric arc furnace operating cycle is called the tap-to-tap cycle. The EAF has developed as an efficient melting apparatus, with designs focusing on increased capacity.
EAF operating cycle is called tap to tap cycle or a heat and is made up of the components namely (i) charging of the furnace, (ii) melting phase, (iii) refining phase, (iv) deslagging operation, (v) tapping of liquid steel, and furnace turnaround. Tap to tap time is normally less than 60 minutes in modern EAFs.
Ladle Refining of liquid metal is a proven technology to produce high quality steel. LRF is used to raise the temperature and adjust the chemical composition of molten metal. Ladle Refining Furnaces (LRFs) are used to desulphurise steel, remove other impurities and hold the molten steel for casting operations.
The ladle furnace is to refine the molten steel melted in the primary furnace (electric arc furnace, open-hearth furnace, converter). The working principle of the ladle furnace is similar to that of the electric arc furnace. The graphite electrode is energized to generate an electric arc to heat and melt steel. The electric arc furnace operating cycle is called the tap-to-tap cycle and is made up of the following operations: Furnace charging Melting Refining De-slagging Tapping Furnace turn-around Modern operations aim for a tap-to-tap time of less than 60 minutes. Some twin shell furnace operations are achieving tap-to-tap times of 35 to 40 minutes.
When steel, the furnace body is tilted forward, the tuyere is exposed on the liquid surface of the ladle, and the tuyere is buried in the deep part of the molten pool during normal blowing. The amount of refined gas is gradually reduced with the decarburization process during operation, and is only 0.5 when it reaches the low-carbon range.

The electric arc furnace produces an electric arc which gives an arc temperature between 3000 °C and 3500 °C on L.T. (Low Tension) operation. Basically, the electric arc is nothing but the flow electric current through an air gap between two conducting electrodes. Working of Electric Arc Furnace

The Transformer of Ladle Refining Furnace. The transformer of the ladle refining furnace is a kind of electric furnace transformer with low output voltage, large current, fixed arc spike and small current fluctuation. In order to adapt to the change in furnace conditions, precision on-load voltage regulation is selected for all transformers.

Electric arc furnace is the industrial furnace for melting ore and metal by the high temperature from electrode electric arc. The electric arc generated from gas discharge is with concentrated energy, arc area temperature is above 3000℃. Regarding metal melting, process flexibility of EAF is better than other steelmaking furnace, which can remove inclusions of S, P …
Answer: The working of electric furnace includes charging the electrode, meltdown period (melting the metal) and refining. The heavy and light scrap in the large basket is preheated with the help of exhaust gas. For speeding up the slag formation, burnt lime …
The principle of desulphurization is to transfer the sulfur dissolved in the liquid steel to a CaO-rich slag phase. This process is typically carried out in a ladle furnace (LF). For this process to be successful, two conditions need to be fulfilled: The slag must be fully liquid (liquid fraction > 0.9). This is required for kinetic reasons.
Melting. While some steel makers continue to use electric arc furnaces (EAF) for steel billet making, the industry is now beginning to see the many advantages that induction furnaces (IF) offer. Electric Arc Furnace Working Principle and Operation Electric arc furnaces work on the principle of the electrode forming an arc between itself and the top layer of metal to be melted. The operation begins with a delivery of steel scrap to the scrap bay, located at one end of the EAF building.
Ladle refining furnace holds the liquid metal for process of casting. Before Ladle Refining treatment there will be melting process which could be processed either in electric arc furnace or in the Induction Melting Furnaces. In absence of LRFs, There will be requirement of higher tapping temperatures from steel melting or steel making furnaces.
